SUPERPLEX: Three TImes

This Superplex "field trip" happened this past Tuesday, and it was fun to head out into the real world. Only a few people could make it (perhaps because it's the last week of the university semester), but we still got in some interesting conversation afterwards! Are the characters meant to be the same in each segment? If so, do they actually change in their personalities or stay the same?

Superplex Presents:
"Three Times" by Hou Hsiao-Hsien (newest release by master of the Taiwanese new wave)-- starring Shu Qi and Chang Chen
Venue: Broadway Cinematheque, Prosperous Garden, 3 Public Square Street, Yau Ma Tei, Kowloon (see attached map and link)
Discount Ticket Price: 33.75 HKD, but first person to RSVP by email will get a FREE TICKET!!!
Date: Tuesday, November 29
Time: 7:15-10:00pm (meet at 7:15pm, movie starts at 7:20, will end by 9:30, then we will move to Cinematheque's Kubrick Cafe for coffee and discussion)
This week-- a special Superplex field trip!
Instead of a screening on campus, this Tuesday Superplex will be headed to the multiplex-- Broadway Cinematheque in this case. We thought it would be great to see this well-regarded new movie while it's still in theatres, and experience public film culture at a center of HK indie cinema-- Broadway Cinematheque and Kubrick. If you are interested in coming, please RSVP by email so that we know who will be attending. The first RSVP will receive a FREE TICKET to the screening-- for everyone else, if you want a discount ticket (33.75 HKD), let us know how many to buy and you can pay Samantha back later. If you want to be responsible for your own ticket, it will be 45 HKD.

Please plan to meet at the entrance of Broadway Cinema no later than 7:15, we will watch the movie and then gather for optional coffee and discussion at Kubrick Cafe next door after it ends.
Questions? Comments? Feel free to email (b109368@cuhk.edu.hk), SMS or call (9579 9980) Samantha.
Note: This film deals frankly with sexuality, and though it is only category IIA you must decide if you are comfortable with this subject matter.
Another Note: This will be the last Superplex of the semester, though expect us to come back with a bang in early January! If you have any particular ideas for films to screen or activities to hold, please contact Samantha. We will also announce a meeting for people interested in joining the Superplex Organizing Committee, so let us know in advance if you'd like to be involved.

Three Times (IIA)
133 mins
Director: Hou Hsiao Hsien
Cast: Shu Qi, Chang Chen
Mandarin with English and Chinese subtitles

THREE TIMES evokes three moments of euphoria lost forever in the folds of time. Three different time periods in Taiwan, with the lead roles played by the same actors. Year 1966: A "billiard gal" and a young soldier meet once and then struggle to find each other again. Finally they share stolen moments together on a beautiful warm evening. Year 1911: During the Japanese occupation of Taiwan, a decent man wins the admiration of a courtesan through his kindness, but because of his modern principles he cannot take her as his concubine. He sends a letter from Shanghai that conveys his regret and his unfulfilled love. Year 2005: Under the threat of warfare with China, Taiwan is unsettled. A young bi-sexual woman becomes involved in a mad three-way love affair.
