SLEEPOVER PSYCHEDELIA

Finally, the Sleepover Psychedelia show that Adrian Wong and I have co-curated is almost ready! We're in the final countdown, and feeling a bit crazed but excited.

For people who are in Hong Kong, come by the opening, Saturday April 1, 7pm at Kapok! There will be art, music, and drinks (possibly sponsored by Stella Artois, ooh la laaaa)

SLEEPOVER PSYCHEDELIA
An Exhibition Curated by Samantha Culp and Adrian Wong

Installation by Adrian Wong

Artists: Brian Chippendale, Thomas Galloway, Matt Lock, Devon Varmega, Brent Wadden
April 1- May 5, 2006

Opening Saturday April 1, 7pm

Kapok Gallery Space, 9 Dragon Road, Tin Hau, Hong Kong

www.ka-pok.com

Not so long ago, a new aesthetic began bubbling up through the bedrooms and basements of suburban America. In hand-made fanzines, indie album covers and personal blogs, the same symbols and set of concerns kept appearing-- unicorns and space-ships, pyramids and laser-beams, neon colors and graphing paper.

This April, HK-based artists and curators Samantha Culp and Adrian Wong bring you a show featuring five young American artists whose work taps into this same aesthetic of secret clubhouses and tie-dyed insanity.
Expect eye-popping works on paper, cardboard, stapled-booklets, pieces of wood, plastic masks, t-shirts, Cds, and everything in between— all to be framed by an installation by co-curator and artist Adrian Wong. The interactive “magic castle” will allow viewers to physically enter the “Sleepover Psychedelia” universe, and bring all these wildly unique works into a unified whole.

Truly underground American art is rarely (never?) exhibited in Hong Kong, so this will be a special chance for the HK public to experience some of the innovative style and feverish energy bursting out of this sub-cultural movement. Sleepover Psychedelia lies somewhere beyond punk rock and new age, geek and freak, and serves as a much-needed electro-shock to the mainstream Western art-world. On April 1 at the new Kapok Gallery Space in Tin Hau, come turn on, tune in, and psych yourself out.

SUPERPLEX is back!

After some hibernation over the winter holidays and Lunar New Year, Superplex is back with a bark in the Year of the Dog! This coming week: a meeting at CUHK to discuss future activities of Superplex and ways that students and other participants can get involved, followed by a screening of an as-yet undetermined movie (but it will be good!).

Rejoin the magic:
Thursday February 9, 7:30-9:30, NAH 115 in New Asia College (call 9579 9980 if you need better directions).

SUPERPLEX: Three TImes

This Superplex "field trip" happened this past Tuesday, and it was fun to head out into the real world. Only a few people could make it (perhaps because it's the last week of the university semester), but we still got in some interesting conversation afterwards! Are the characters meant to be the same in each segment? If so, do they actually change in their personalities or stay the same?

Superplex Presents:
"Three Times" by Hou Hsiao-Hsien (newest release by master of the Taiwanese new wave)-- starring Shu Qi and Chang Chen
Venue: Broadway Cinematheque, Prosperous Garden, 3 Public Square Street, Yau Ma Tei, Kowloon (see attached map and link)
Discount Ticket Price: 33.75 HKD, but first person to RSVP by email will get a FREE TICKET!!!
Date: Tuesday, November 29
Time: 7:15-10:00pm (meet at 7:15pm, movie starts at 7:20, will end by 9:30, then we will move to Cinematheque's Kubrick Cafe for coffee and discussion)
This week-- a special Superplex field trip!
Instead of a screening on campus, this Tuesday Superplex will be headed to the multiplex-- Broadway Cinematheque in this case. We thought it would be great to see this well-regarded new movie while it's still in theatres, and experience public film culture at a center of HK indie cinema-- Broadway Cinematheque and Kubrick. If you are interested in coming, please RSVP by email so that we know who will be attending. The first RSVP will receive a FREE TICKET to the screening-- for everyone else, if you want a discount ticket (33.75 HKD), let us know how many to buy and you can pay Samantha back later. If you want to be responsible for your own ticket, it will be 45 HKD.

Please plan to meet at the entrance of Broadway Cinema no later than 7:15, we will watch the movie and then gather for optional coffee and discussion at Kubrick Cafe next door after it ends.
Questions? Comments? Feel free to email (b109368@cuhk.edu.hk), SMS or call (9579 9980) Samantha.
Note: This film deals frankly with sexuality, and though it is only category IIA you must decide if you are comfortable with this subject matter.
Another Note: This will be the last Superplex of the semester, though expect us to come back with a bang in early January! If you have any particular ideas for films to screen or activities to hold, please contact Samantha. We will also announce a meeting for people interested in joining the Superplex Organizing Committee, so let us know in advance if you'd like to be involved.

Three Times (IIA)
133 mins
Director: Hou Hsiao Hsien
Cast: Shu Qi, Chang Chen
Mandarin with English and Chinese subtitles

THREE TIMES evokes three moments of euphoria lost forever in the folds of time. Three different time periods in Taiwan, with the lead roles played by the same actors. Year 1966: A "billiard gal" and a young soldier meet once and then struggle to find each other again. Finally they share stolen moments together on a beautiful warm evening. Year 1911: During the Japanese occupation of Taiwan, a decent man wins the admiration of a courtesan through his kindness, but because of his modern principles he cannot take her as his concubine. He sends a letter from Shanghai that conveys his regret and his unfulfilled love. Year 2005: Under the threat of warfare with China, Taiwan is unsettled. A young bi-sexual woman becomes involved in a mad three-way love affair.

Nov 20 and 27 Campus Creative Channel Screenings

The information on these Campus Creative Channel screenings is only in Chinese (and my Cantonese reading skills are much worse than my speaking ones), but Steven Pang of HKICC says:

"It's the resulting video works of two successive parts of a media education pilot scheme, with 10 participating schools, around 15 artists and responsible teachers... These schools wish to learn to run their own campus TV and ways to develop content (since they did not know what to do with the equipment the schools own).

There will be some 20-30-minute Campus TV program (from the leadership program). And many 1 minuters from the artist-in-residence section. The artists will show their "responding" video works also. Four programs should be all different. Details will be available on the website later, IN CHINESE again :-p"

La Chinoise
Dir: Jean-Luc Godard
Year: 1967
Runtime: 93 Min.

Review from TimeOut:
Godard's brilliant dialectical farce, distinctly disquieting as well as gratingly funny, in which five Parisian students, members of a Maoist cell, discuss the implications of the Chinese cultural revolution and the chances of using terrorism to effect a similar upheaval in the West. Dazzlingly designed as a collage of slogans and poster images, it was widely attacked at the time for playing with politics. But Godard was well aware what he was doing creating these 'Robinson Crusoes with Marxism as their Man Friday', and his film stands as a prophetic and remarkably acute analysis of the impulse behind the events of May 1968 in all their desperate sincerity and impossible naïveté.
